Industrial Visit to the 110 kV/ 33 kV Transmission Substation

The Department of Electrical Engineering organized an industrial visit for third-year Electrical Engineering students to the 110 kV/33 kV Transmission Substation at Kuvarbaon, Ratnagiri on 30th April 2026 as part of the Power System Protection & Switchgear Lab curriculum. The objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to real-time power system operations, substation equipment, and protection mechanisms used in high-voltage transmission systems.

During the visit, Shri Ashutosh Tambe, Deputy Executive Engineer, MSETCL, along with other officials, explained the single-line diagram (SLD) of the substation and demonstrated various equipment such as lightning arresters, circuit breakers, current transformers, potential transformers, isolators, PLCC systems, and their operational ratings and installation methods. Students were also briefed about different types of conductors used in transmission lines based on length and capacity.

The session covered key aspects including substation layout, power transformers, busbars, protection relays and coordination schemes, switchgear operations, interlocking mechanisms, SCADA system functioning, safety procedures, and maintenance practices in high-voltage environments. A total of 65 students and 2 faculty members participated in the visit, coordinated by Prof. Priya Potdar, with Dr. Sandeep D. Chawda and Prof. P. A. Potdar accompanying the students. The visit provided a valuable hands-on learning experience, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in power systems engineering.
