Ratnadurg Fort Clean-up Drive

Ratnadurg Fort was constructed during the Bahamanees rule and was captured by Adilshah. Later Ch. Shivaji Maharaj took charge of the fort in 1670. Due to garbage piled up and lack of maintenance, this fort was losing its historical glory. Keeping the noble motive in mind to preserve and restore the historical monument, the Department of Electrical Engineering conducted a Clean-up Drive at Ratnadurg Fort on 28th February 2023 in association with the Department of Lifelong Learning Extension FAMT Ratnagiri from 6.30 am to 8.30 am.

The drive aimed to remove all the non-biodegradable wastes like plastic covers, plastic straws, rubber, and thermocouple. Before disposal, the plastic waste was segregated and sent for recycling and the rest of the garbage was collected by the Ratnagiri Municipal Corporation to dumping yards. Prof. S. S. Wamane, the Event Coordinator, shared the reason for choosing Ratnadurg fort for the cleaning drive. When the Mandovi beach was cleaned, surveys were conducted simultaneously to understand the cause of increasing garbage at the fort. It was realized that a lot of non-biodegradable wastes and glass bottles were being thrown at the Ratnadurg Fort since it is a popular tourist spot.

A total of 36 students in the second and third year of Electrical Engineering participated in this drive and cleaned the fort. Rohit Sawant and student representatives took efforts to make this event successful. Dr J. J. Mane, the Head and Prof. S. S. Wamane coordinated the campaign successfully. The initiative brought an impressive change and found a special mention by nearby citizens of the Ratnadurg Fort.
